Zedu Weekly Wrap – 13 September 2024
This week we start with a serious matter for rural and remote practitioners…
as we have been made aware that the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care is undertaking a consultation on the National Safety and Quality Medical Imaging (NSQMI) Standards. These standards will replace the Diagnostic Imaging Accreditation Scheme (DIAS) Standards.
As we understand it, the proposed new standards will significantly increase the accreditation burden (and subsequently the cost) faced by rural and remote physicians who wish to get a Location Specific Provider Number (LSPN) assocaited with the billing for the utilisation of point of care ultrasound.
This will ultimately present a significant barrier to the use of ultrasound, and inievitably impact patient care. This is a significant proposed change, so we encourage you to look at the consultation process and lodge your views here.
In FOAM ultrasound news of the week take a look at:
- Melody Herman’s (@anesthesiadocmd) video on “Is that a Pneumothorax? International Evidence-Based Recommendations for Lund POCUS” presented as ESRA2024 (7 September)
- Perez et al in @JCM_MDPI on “Critical Care Ultrasound in Shock: A Comprehensive Review of Ultrasound Protocol for Hemodynamic Assessment in the Intensive Care Unit” (10 September)
- Carolynne Cormack (@cazcormack) in BMC Medical Education on “Competencies required by sonographers teaching ultrasound interprofessionally: a Delphi consensus study” (7 September)
Checking out now – and please do look at the ACSQHC consultation.
See you next week.

(1/x) I use #POCUS almost every day in clinical practice after my #pocus fellowship.
Here’s my top tips for anyone learning or using #pocus 👇
(Including how I would learn #pocus if I was starting over without mentorship…)
