Objectives

On completion of this four-day clinically focused ultrasound training program, emergency physicians will:
  • Use ultrasound system controls to optimize imaging for accurate diagnosis in clinical practice
  • Develop proficiency in probe manipulation to efficiently acquire diagnostic images for bedside emergency ultrasound
  • Describe the limitations and clinical integration of the following bedside ultrasound examinations:
    • Renal
    • Gallbladder
    • scrotum
    • Ocular
    • Soft tissue
    • Peripheral nerve blocks
    • 1st trimester
Use a systematic approach to conduct point of care ultrasound assessment of
  • Renal calculi and hydronephrosis
  • Gallstones and biliary pathology
  • Testicular torsion, epididymitis, orchitis and acute scrotum,
  • DVT
  • Foreign bodies in the eye, retinal detachment and ocular trauma
  • Lumps and bumps, foreign bodies and musculoskeletal applications such as gross muscle tears, joint effusions and fractures
  • Peripheral nerve location and approach for guided nerve block procedures
  • Early pregnancy assessment of pain and bleeding and evaluation of ectopic pregnancy
Demonstrate ultrasound guided needle placement in- plane and out of plane for vascular access and procedural applications using ultrasound simulators
