Credentialling in Emergency Medicine
According to ACEM policy:
- Clinicians must be credentialed for their specific scope of sonographic practice (P21).
- Emergency medicine physicians who provide PoCUS services must have completed appropriate training and gained extensive hands-on experience to perform and interpret focused ultrasound imaging (P21).
- Physicians must successfully complete a credentialing process (P21) and adhere to ongoing skills maintenance requirements (P733) for each ultrasound modality they wish to perform and interpret.
- Credentialing in ultrasound is managed by the local health authority (P733)
How do I get credentialled?
The credentialing process requires candidates to:
- Complete an appropriate instructional educational program
- Perform and record a requisite number of accurate proctored emergency department ultrasounds and formative assessments
- Pass a summative assessment
Once credentialed, emergency department sonologists must meet ongoing maintenance requirements.
Who can supervise me?
Your local health service should determine this. According to ACEM, an emergency medicine sonologist or qualified sonographer can observe the candidate performing the ultrasound examination.
A sonologist is a practitioner who has completed this credentialing process, the Certificate in Clinician Performed Ultrasound (CCPU) or holds the DDU (Diploma of Diagnostic Ultrasound), FRANZCR (Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiology), or equivalent qualifications such as the Postgraduate Certificate in Clinician Performed Ultrasound.
How can Zedu help with your education?
Zedu bedside emergency ultrasound
Zedu’s four-day Introductory Ultrasound for Emergency Medicine course encompasses the core POCUS modules designated by ACEM, including eFAST, AAA, Needle Guidance (IV Access), Focused Echo in Life Support, and Lung.
This course fulfills the criteria specified in ACEM’s G25 Guideline for ultrasound education programs and the coursework requirements set by ASUM for the corresponding CCPU modules.
In addition to the core modules, ACEM endorses the use of ultrasound imaging by emergency physicians for evaluating hydronephrosis, intrauterine pregnancy identification, biliary tract disease, soft tissue studies, deep vein thrombosis, vascular access, and other needle-guided procedures.
Zedu’s four-day Advanced Emergency Ultrasound course covers these advanced clinical ultrasound applications
How can Zedu help with your logbook?
Zedu provides tailored support to help candidates meet their logbook requirements efficiently. Our personalised scanning practice days, led by clinically experienced coaches (sonographers and sonologists), focus on rapidly developing ultrasound skills.
Up to 50% of logbook cases may be completed in a non-clinical setting. ACEM acknowledges the importance of proctored scans (directly supervised) during your experiential learning phase, as they are vital for identifying areas requiring additional practice and understanding. Additionally, some proctored scans can function as formative assessments, with at least two scans required for each modality (P733).
In just two days, you can fulfil up to 50% of the logbook requirements for core modules such as eFAST, AAA, Focused Echo in Life Support, and Lung Ultrasound.
During these scanning practice sessions, a credentialed ultrasound expert, such as an emergency medicine physician or sonographer, will observe your examinations, providing real-time feedback on your ultrasound technique.
Our team will guide you in developing your skills in image acquisition and optimization strategies, ensuring you use the machine effectively to obtain the highest quality images. Zedu will arrange a diverse range of patients for your scanning practice. Additionally, we will review best practices for appropriately labelling and storing images, and provide a take-home image exemplar for your reference.
Completion of Credentialing Requirements and Local Scope of Practice Compliance
Once you have completed the necessary education program, completed the required number of proctored scans, maintained your logbook, and passed the summative assessment, you will have fulfilled the requirements specified in ACEM Policy 733—Credentialing for Emergency Medicine Ultrasonography. Additionally, consult with your clinical ultrasound lead (CLUS) to ensure that these credentials align with your local hospital’s scope of practice requirements.
Why is learning ultrasound so important for medical professionals?
It is our strong belief – regardless of curriculum requirements – that every emergency or critical care physician must understand ultrasound. Regardless of its utility in your context, knowing what ultrasound can do, and how it can be applied is like a good shot of espresso coffee – once you get a taste you’ll want more. And more…
And once you get started it’s a no brainer that ultrasound skills will help you be a better health practitioner. In fact, ultrasound is recognised around the world as one of the most important skills you can develop to improve outcomes, save time and money (for you and your patient).
Unfortunately, most emergency or critical care physicians have been exposed to very little training. And where they have it has been in a very unorganised and scattered approach. More often than not training has been provided by energetic enthusiasts in the workplace who can demonstrate the potential for ultrasound, but – while passionate – haven’t invested in their ability to teach the art and science behind it. Plus the compromises that we all know come from training at work means a less than ideal learning environment. This results in little take away skills, no pathway to develop skills and ultimately disappointment.
But you can do something about this. In order for you to avoid the stressful ups and downs of learning ultrasound, having a strong foundation on which to build your skills and a clear plan in place to support your development is fundamental. That’s where we can help.
Skills development
Every ultrasound user must establish the skills fundamental to acquiring an image – from turning a system on and optimising the system setup, to patient positioning and ergonomics. We’ll give you the foundations for independent practice.
Scanning Skills
To get the most out of your efforts and before picking up a probe it’s important to identify your objective – do you have a purpose for scanning? Scanning for scanning’s sake isn’t optimal. When learning you need to engage in deliberate practice to develop your ultrasound skills. When applied clinically, you need to have the ability to define your needs, identify limitations and make decisions. We’ll help you focus on where you’re going and what you want to achieve.
Learning Pathway
Attending a course is one thing – making the time to develop your ultrasound skills and abilities is another. Learning ultrasound is a lifelong commitment – trust us, we know. Commit to invest your time before you start. Take time to remove practice barriers. Focus your time. Track your progress. Spend time developing skills out of the clinic. We’ll work with you to identify a pathway for skills development in your context.
Support
When you get back to the workplace, what’s next? Early enthusiasm to use ultrasound can soon fade to frustration when you return to the workplace, where the reality of clinical demands and often lack of ultrasound users can undermine your confidence. We can help by providing ongoing support, training and credentialing – as well as ongoing information through our free coaching corner and social media posts. We’re there for you.

Introduction to Bedside Ultrasound – part 1 [iBook]
Introduction to Bedside Ultrasound seeks to teach bedside ultrasound to students in a more efficient, directed format than previous texts. It accomplishes this with a plethora of multimedia adjuncts. Instead of simply reading about ultrasound pathology and protocols, the reader can watch actual videos and demonstrations of the pathology from directly within the book while reading. This experience is closer to bedside learning with a true expert than reading a traditional textbook.

The ICU Ultrasound pocket book is a concise, targeted reference source to enable the novice or advanced emergency or ICU clinician to incorporate point of care ultrasound into their practice.
