Objectives

On completion of this one day clinically focused ultrasound course, participants will be able to:
  1. Use ultrasound system controls to optimize imaging for accurate diagnosis in clinical practice
  2. Develop proficiency in probe manipulation to efficiently acquire diagnostic images for point of care gastric ultrasound
  3. Accurately identify key anatomical landmarks (aorta, sma, IVC, gastric antrum, body, and fundus)
  4. Distinguish between an empty and full stomach using ultrasound
  5. Describe the imaging findings associated with an empty stomach, liquid in the stomach, and solid food in the stomach.
  6. Quantify gastric volume using the Perlas method
  7. Explain how different patient positions (supine, semi-recumbent, right lateral decubitus) affect gastric ultrasound imaging
  8. Assess and interpret gastric ultrasound findings in high-risk patients (e.g. those with delayed gastric emptying) to evaluate the risk of pulmonary aspiration of gastric contents

Key Benefits for Attendees

  • Gain hands-on scanning skills under the supervision of ultrasound experts
  • Learn to assess delayed gastric emptying and aspiration risk
  • Immediate applicability in clinical practice
  • Boost confidence in performing gastric ultrasound at the point of care
  • Develop the ability to improve patient outcomes through better risk stratification

Why Gastric Ultrasound Matters

Gastric ultrasound is a crucial tool in modern emergency medicine and critical care. It allows for rapid, non-invasive assessment of gastric contents, helping healthcare providers make informed decisions about patient management. Whether assessing a patient’s aspiration risk before surgery or evaluating gastric emptying in emergencies, the ability to perform and interpret gastric ultrasound is invaluable in minimizing complications and improving patient safety. This ultrasound course empowers medical professionals with the knowledge and practical skills they need to enhance patient care through gastric ultrasound, making it an essential component of modern clinical practice
